Our client purchased a new-build property in Sonning, Berkshire, where the garden was, like many newly constructed homes, a complete blank canvas.
With little existing landscaping in place, the space offered the perfect opportunity to create a beautiful, practical and carefully considered garden designed to complement the new property. The brief was to transform the uninspiring outdoor space into an attractive garden that would provide areas for entertaining, relaxing and enjoying the outdoors, while introducing structure, planting and year-round interest.
New-build gardens can present exciting opportunities, but they can also require considerable thought and planning. Often characterised by compacted ground, basic lawns, fencing and limited planting, they need to be carefully considered to ensure the finished landscape feels established and connected to the property.
The aim was to create a garden that felt mature and established while remaining contemporary enough to complement the architecture of the new home.
A key part of the project was introducing a strong framework through carefully selected hard landscaping materials. Paths, paved areas and other structural elements helped to divide the garden into distinct areas while creating a natural flow between the house and garden.
The hard landscaping was installed with precision, ensuring that levels, drainage and finishes were carefully considered throughout the project. High-quality materials were selected to provide a durable and attractive finish that would continue to look good as the garden matured.
The resulting layout created a series of functional spaces without making the garden feel overly formal or divided.
Planting was central to the transformation. With very little established vegetation in the original garden, carefully selected trees, shrubs, perennials and ornamental planting were introduced to soften the hard landscaping and bring colour, texture and seasonal interest to the space.
The planting scheme was designed to provide interest throughout the year, with a combination of evergreen structure, flowering plants and contrasting foliage.
Trees and larger plants were positioned strategically to create height and definition, while lower-level planting helped soften boundaries and integrate the different areas of the garden.
The completed garden provides the clients with a much more inviting outdoor environment and demonstrates how a new-build garden can be transformed from a blank canvas into a highly considered landscape.
