Hortlands were appointed to provide specialist work on the trees that surround The Gherkin building in central London, including planting of new trees.
This project was delivered in two carefully planned phases: rejuvenating existing trees and planting a large semi-mature specimen tree.
The trees surrounding the building had been struggling to thrive in the challenging conditions of their urban environment. Compacted soil, restricted root space and limited access to air had taken their toll, leaving some trees in poor health.
Following multiple site visits, detailed planning and extensive logistics preparation, our team began the rejuvenation works. Unfortunately, some trees had deteriorated beyond recovery and needed to be removed and replaced. We selected healthy, robust replacement trees capable of adapting to the demands of their urban surroundings.
For the trees that could be saved, we implemented targeted rejuvenation treatments designed to improve their growing conditions and encourage healthier root development.
The second phase involved the careful planting of a substantial semi-mature tree, requiring detailed planning and specialist logistics to ensure the installation could be completed safely and efficiently.
From selecting the right specimen to coordinating access, delivery and planting, every stage was carefully considered. The result was a significant new feature that complemented the surrounding landscape while providing immediate maturity and visual impact.
For this particular project, one of the most effective treatments was the installation of underground air tubes around each tree.
The tubes were carefully positioned around the root zone, with a vent remaining open at ground level. This created a direct route for fresh air to reach the tree’s roots, helping to alleviate some of the problems associated with compacted soil and restricted oxygen availability.
By improving aeration around the root system, we were able to give the existing trees a better environment in which to recover and continue growing.
This project demonstrates the importance of taking a considered approach to urban tree care. Where trees are struggling, the right intervention can make a significant difference to their long-term health and survival.
Where replacement is necessary, selecting robust species suited to their environment can provide a much stronger foundation for future growth.
