Boundary Hedge Installation Project

The local council had planted a mixture of young native hedging plants within the roadside verge. Unfortunately, the plants were struggling to establish, resulting in stunted, uneven and untidy growth that provided very little effective screening.

At the existing rate of growth, it could have taken four to five years before the hedge provided meaningful privacy. With some plants already failing and growth inconsistent throughout the planting, the finished result was unlikely to deliver the attractive and effective boundary the property required. The new hedge needed to be attractive, low maintenance, eye-catching and functional, while also complementing the character and grandeur of the spa.

Before recommending a suitable instant hedge, Hortlands assessed the characteristics of the site alongside the usual horticultural considerations, including soil type, compaction, drainage, sunlight, wind exposure and aspect.

Following the assessment, we recommended two suitable options: Beech (Fagus sylvatica), providing a traditional deciduous hedge, and Portuguese Laurel (Prunus lusitanica), offering dense, evergreen screening throughout the year.

After considering both options, the client chose Portuguese Laurel for its evergreen foliage, attractive appearance and ability to provide immediate, year-round screening.
