The hedge for this project needed to be instant and evergreen, and one that could be kept formal and tidy. Due to the money already spent on the building works of the house, the hedge also needed to fit into the budget that the customer had allowed for the landscaping and garden works.
The hedge we recommended and agreed with our customer was the outstanding Elveden instant hedges of Western red cedar (Thuja plicata), a popular conifer ideally suited for hedging.
The first step of the job was to carefully create a trench for the hedge element to sit in, and excavate the soil by hand.
The Elveden instant hedge was delivered to London and unloaded from the truck and machine carried in using our Avant telescopic handler with a special lifting bar attached. This ensures that the hedges do not get damaged during the installation process. This had to take place whilst building work was still ongoing so space was limited, but our team are used to working in such conditions.
With that being said, our staff and machinery had to carry out this work with extra care and expertise.
Our unique Elveden instant hedges are measured to the length required, then carefully cut and lifted at the nursery in Thetford, Norfolk. The hedge is then loaded onto trucks and delivered to site where our planting teams carry out the installation, joining them together to form a fully formed instant hedge.
A respected local developer contacted Hortlands to discuss screening a newly developed bock of flats from a busy road and footpath just outside London.
Hortlands were consulted on the regeneration of a large yew hedge which had succumbed to damage from deer and poor pruning.
