Cottage garden design and build

Our client purchased a new build property in Sonning, Berkshire, and like many new builds the garden was a complete blank canvas waiting to be transformed. The client instructed us to design him a cottage style garden that will flourish with colour as the months go on.

Our projects coordinator Stu, who deals with all our garden designs, created a comprehensive design that delivered everything the client had asked for and more. Flower beds full of rudbeckia, lavender, erigeron, nepeta and geranium to name a few of the plants used. A semi mature liquidambar tree that takes pride of place in the center of the garden along with Cotswold stone pathways and sandstone setts.

Once the design was approved our landscape and planting teams got to work on bringing the design to life. The first stage of the build was to install the instant laurel hedge around the outside, back boarder of the garden. The hedge added privacy from the neighboring houses while still being in keeping with the cottage look and feel of the garden. Next the pathways were mapped and dug out, and the sandstone setts were then cemented into placed. Soil was added to the flower beds, and a drip line irrigation system was also fitted at this stage. The flower beds were then planted up with all the plants, keeping in mind this job was completed in winter so we have to wait to see them in all their glory, and the liquidambar tree was also planted at this stage too. Lastly, the loose Cotswold stones where added to the pathways.

This project really did utilise everything that Hortlands can offer as a company, meaning we saw the job through from start to finish. Offering our expertise throughout.

If you have a project in mind we would love to hear from you so we can show you the Hortlands difference.
