Fully Formed Instant Hedges
Unlike instant hedge, fully formed instant hedge is specially grown into a finished hedge at the nursery before being sold. Fully formed instant hedges are available in 14 species and in heights of 1.2m, 1.5m, 1.8m and 2m tall. They are cut and lifted to order and can be supplied and planted all-year-round. The root system is 40cm deep x 60cm wide that we cut, lift and transport in 2½ metre sections (the width of our delivery trucks). Fully formed instant hedge is sold per metre length (linear metre). Each 2½ metre section of fully formed instant hedge, like the one in the picture weighs approximately 300kg
Elements
Field grown elements are square pruned to create a finished hedge plant that can be planted closely together to form a finished instant hedge or used in garden design as a topiary piece. They are cut, lifted, prepared and supplied wire-net rootballed, available during the planting season, from October through to April for deciduous and September – May for evergreens. Sizes from 80cm tall. The ones in the picture are 6 metres tall and could weigh 4500kg / 4.5 ton
Screening plants
High hedge or tall screening plants are grown to provide privacy, hiding neighbouring buildings or unsightly views. They can be planted as solid screens or thoughtfully placed as individual plants.
An example is the evergreen conifer, Thuja plicata (Western red cedar), up to 10 metres tall. They are cut, lifted, prepared and supplied wire-net rootballed, available during the planting season, from October through to April for deciduous and September – May for evergreens. The Screening plants in the picture are 10 metres tall and could weigh 1000kg / 10 tonnes.

The term feathered refers to a plant that has its branches and foliage starting at ground level, for example a conifer or shrub
Semi-mature trees
Grown for instant landscaping, semi-mature trees create an immediate effect. Their size and weight requires experienced landscapers and machinery to lift, handle and plant. A clear stem semi-mature tree begins with a stem girth of 20cm. The stem girth circumference measurement is taken at 100cm up the stem from the ground level / top of the rootball. The girth size of clear stem trees is the most accurate way to determine how mature they are, height measurements greatly vary from species to species and can therefore not so easily be calculated for maturity. The tree in the picture is a 20-25cm girth clear stem tree, 5m tall and could weigh 300kg / .3 ton
Clear stem plants
The term clear stem refers to a plant that has a stem from ground level before reaching the foliage, for example a tree with a crown of leaves that can be walked under.
Instant hedging plants
Individually field-grown specially for producing instant hedges, these plants are regularly top pruned to achieve dense foliage, avoiding a narrow top. Instant hedging plants can be planted closely together or to save money, spaced apart, leaving growing space between each plant. Instant hedging plants up to 1.8 metres high can be lifted and handled without the use of machinery. The one in the picture is 2 metres tall and will weigh approximately 200kg
Wire-net rootballs
The roots of most field grown plants are cut, lifted and wrapped in hessian and wire netting, tightly fitted to provide stability of the soil and roots during the transportation and handling thereafter. In most planting situations the hessian and wire netting should be left on when placing into the planting pit. They help the plants establishment by retaining and stopping the soil from falling away from the roots, the hessian then slowly breaks up and rots into the soil and the wire-netting rusts away into the ground.
