Irrigation Systems Explained

However you enjoy and use your garden, you will want to ensure it looks its best whatever the weather or time of year.

Hortlands have been designing and installing high quality watering systems for more than 15 years. We can help with systems of all sizes: from small tap systems to fully automatic systems for estates covering many acres. Weather stations can ensure that each area of the garden receives the correct amount of water reducing watering if rain is forecast or increasing in a heatwave.

Our designs include garden irrigation systems for lawns, borders and flower beds, hanging baskets, greenhouses and planters – saving time, money and water. Choosing the right irrigation system for your garden will be easily determined with a free, no obligation site visit.

At what stage should I irrigate my garden?

The short answer to that question would be, anytime! However, having a correctly designed irrigation system installed whilst a garden is being re-landscaped is an easy way of protecting the investments made in new plants, lawns and borders. It makes the process very easy and dramatically reduces the amount of upheaval caused.

New plants especially require plenty for water to ensure they root properly and establish quickly. This alone is a good reason to irrigate a garden – always ask your professional garden designer or landscaper to include irrigation in their plans, especially if you haven’t contacted Hortlands for the job.

Irrigation Controllers

Controllers are available in various degrees of complexity.

Rain Bird is a preferred supplier for us for smaller jobs. A popular choice of controller is their electronic water timer. It’s a tap mounted timer that is ideal for controlling small irrigation systems supplied by mains water. These include hanging baskets, planter and small borders by micro spray or drip systems.

Another preference of ours is the I-Core Hunter’s controller. It’s designed more for demanding commercial and high-end residential applications. It’s loaded with innovative features like state-of-the-art flow monitoring, quick system overview access, a factory-installed Smart Port®, six language capability, and a backlit display. It really is all singing and all dancing! The I-Core should be considered for most high-end and large irrigation projects. Some units are expandable to 42 stations or zones so no job is to much for it.

Some controllers are compatible with smartphone apps. Smart Watering Made Simple. They enable your mobile device to turn on sprinklers, set up customized watering schedules, and automate weather adjustments. The perfect addition for any tech loving customer!
